Lisa teaches the concepts behind and the operation of the Rocket Kiln, which is low-fuel, wood-fired, and smokeless! Upcycling a discarded electric kiln atop a uniquely constructed firebox, one can quickly achieve any temperature up to cone 11 in oxidation or reduction. This workshop includes a zoom slidetalk, a walk through of several rocket kiln PDF plan handouts, and viewing a kiln firing in action.
Hannah introduces the technique of printing on clay using frameless silk screens. Students learn how to prepare a screen, including lots of trouble-shooting tips and advice. Hannah helps students select images for the most successful screen-printing. She also shows participants how she uses the screens to print directly onto wet clay or onto newsprint for multi-color paper transfer, and how these printed slabs are turned into beautiful pottery.
Hayne introduces participants to the extruder, making a three-part coffee mug with extruded parts. Additionally, Hayne teaches participants how to make and use tyvek stencils to decorate slabs.
Adero demonstrates how to apply colorful, layered patterns on slabs and how to construct a form using decorated slabs. Throughout the workshop, Adero shares ideas, influences, and advice on developing patterned surfaces, as well as details about slips, underglazes, stencils, and other materials used in her process.
