Sunday, January 5 3-5pm EST, Intro to Rocket Kiln Workshop with Lisa Orr: Lisa will teach the concepts behind and the operation of the Rocket Kiln, which is low-fuel, wood-fired, and smokeless! Upcycling a discarded electric kiln atop a uniquely constructed firebox, one can quickly achieve any temperature up to cone 11 in oxidation or reduction. This will include a zoom slide talk, a walk through of several rocket kiln PDF plan handouts, and viewing a kiln firing in action so everyone can experience proper wood prep and firing technique.

Sunday, January 12 from 3-5pm EST, Preparing a Silk Screen Workshop with Hannah Niswonger: In this 2-hour workshop Hannah will introduce the technique of printing on clay using frameless silk screens. Students will learn how to prepare a screen, including lots of trouble-shooting tips and advice. Hannah will help students select images for the most successful screen-printing. She will also show participants how she uses the screens to print directly onto wet clay or onto newsprint for multi-color paper transfer, and how these printed slabs are turned into beautiful pottery.

Sunday, January 19 from 3-5pm EST, Extruded Mugs and Stencils Workshop with Hayne Bayless: The first hour of this online workshop is an introduction to the extruder, making a three-part coffee mug with extruded parts. The second hour is making and using tyvek stencils to decorate slabs.

Sunday, January 26th, 3-5pm EST, Layering Patterns Workshop with Adero Willard: In this virtual workshop, Adero will demonstrate how she applies colorful, layered patterns on slabs and how to construct a form using decorated slabs. Throughout the workshop, she will share ideas, influences, and advice on developing patterned surfaces, as well as details about slips, underglazes, stencils, and other materials used in her process.

Our 2025 plans include a show organized by Lisa Orr: Treading Lightly, Walking the Talk, which features 15 ceramic artists who are responding to the climate emergency with innovation and beauty. It will be a Featured Exhibit at NCECA 2025 in Salt Lake City.

Proceeds raised will fund this exhibition and POW’s ongoing programming. The past few years have been full of community programs funded by the generosity of our donors. Thank you for your ongoing support!
